There are various interests covered, but with an emerging theme of late - that of preservation of historic artifacts and / or buildings and historical research - particularly Railway Signalling. This has been a long-standing interest, even before I joined 'the railways' and later became as Signalman, but more of that later.
My Father, Harry French, was instrumental in starting a revolution here in Western Australia, in the design of fast Cray-fishing boats. This began in the early 1960s and culminated in the designs used by Harris Craft. The popular wine ferries, once known as "Miss Sandalford" and "Lady Houghton" were designed by Harry, and incorporated an innovative hull design that minimised wash, and therefore decreased erosion of the banks of the Swan River.
In the early 1980s, we setup a small business named "The French Carriage Works - H. French & Sons" to restore and rebuild horse-drawn vehicles. We also built hand-barrows for use in the Pioneer Village, Armadale and elsewhere. Our time at 'the village' led to some interesting, and fun times, including becoming occasional car drivers for Robert Holmes-a-Court's "Heytsbury Classic Car Collection".
